Styskal & Taylor Run Away with the Carrots! Hoagland defies father-time!
It was another gorgeous May morning at Spring Lake and the 17th annual running of the Jack Rabbit Derby. With the recent huge increases in participation at the Resolution Run and the Ilsanjo Classic, I was not quite sure what to expect. The Derby has traditionally seen small numbers of albeit intense runners, still I felt that I should be prepared for an onslaught. Since so many club members had just run the Boston Marathon I had the cream of the crop for race-day volunteers. Plus I knew I could count on Carl Triola and his trusty band of Casa Grande runners and parents for course monitoring. So, I simply bought extra water, snacks and raffle prizes and waited to see how many folks would actually show up. I joked that I had so many volunteers that if the turn-out proved only average, every runner could have a personal valet. As it turned out and as usual, what the participation lacked in numbers was more than made up for in the intensity of the racing.
The 1k Bunny Hop was won by Justin Plott, 10 and Catherine Rauch, 7.
For the main event, the 3-miler, Zack Styskal, 28 won the race with a time of 17:23, and he was followed by Gregg Jennings, 38 with 17:31, and Andy Howard, 47 with 18:08. For the ladies, Casa Grande Sophomore and women's course record holder Jacque Taylor was first with a time of 17:58. Val Sell was second with a time of 21:07, and Lisa Titus-Isabeau was third, with 23.35.
