Empire Runners Cross Country Team
Thank you for a great 2016 season!

November 13th saw 45 of us make a great effort at the Pacific Association Championships in Golden Gate Park. It was a spectacular day and a wonderful way to end the season on a high note.

There were many remarkable individual performances – to name just a few:

  • Kate Papadopoulos was our first woman finisher.
  • Cathy DuBay was close behind. Catherine finished 3rd in her age group in the race and for the season.
  • David White ran a gutsy race, but couldn’t quite catch Tom LeGen of Strawberry. They’ve had an epic dual all season. David finished 2nd in his age group.
  • A year ago we felt a deep sense of angst as Kevin Teuscher faced a cancer diagnosis. Kevin finished his 6-mile race in just under an hour. It’s so good to see him back with us.
  • Sal Avelar finished 2nd in his age group.
  • Brendan Hutchinson raced all 10 races this season – no other Empire Runner did so (although Sal Avelar raced 9 – perhaps he isn’t old enough yet to race all 10).
  • The two Brandons – Abasolo and Day – were our top two finishers in the Open race.

From a team standpoint, all of our age division teams did very well – many of the results were decided by the results of the PA. As you know XC is a team scoring sport, so I am particularly excited that everyone made such an effort. Remember, we moved some of you to score in other divisions, so your showing up to race really helped your teams!

  • Open Women:  9th out of 14 teams total
  • Master Women:  Tied for 3rd out of 10 teams total
  • Senior Women:  2nd out of 9 teams total
  • Open Men:  Tied for 4th out of 12 teams total
  • Master Men:  Tied for 4th out of 11 teams total
  • Senior Men:  2nd out of 10 teams total
  • Super-Senior Men:  3rd out of 8 teams total
  • Veteran Men:  3rd out of 3 teams total

Congratulations to all of you who raced this season. This was an exceptional group this year and a real pleasure to manage.

A special shout out of thanks and admiration to the Open Men and Women – those of you who run for Empire are a delightful part of our team and we all appreciate your racing with us.

To the Williams College connection (those of you who are from or know someone from Williams), I am planning a special Thank You in the City. I’ll keep you posted.

It’s a time of year to count our blessings (which we should do every day, but don’t always). We run under the USATF banner, so we owe some gratitude to the organization of staff and officials who make these events happen, to the other clubs in the PA, and to all your teammates. It is an amazing effort and I for one am very grateful.

For those of you reading this who want to join in the fun next season, please feel free to contact me.

May your travels be safe, your celebrations be joyful and your injuries heal. See you on the trails, on the roads and on the track!
