Committee Report Detail
Student Grant Fund Scholarship Committee 2013

On February 12, 38 letters were sent to coaches and athletic directors at all Sonoma county high schools announcing the 2013 Student Grant Fund. Prior to mailing, the coaches’ list was updated with input from Doug Courtemarche. The application was also updated on the website with all the pertinent information. The deadline for applications is May 3.

In early May, the committee will receive an update from the treasurer as to the amount of funds available for scholarships.  Around May 11, the scholarship selection committee (Brad Zanetti, Alex Wolf-Root, Paul Berg) will meet to review the applications and award scholarships.

If any other club member(s) would like to join the selection committee or review the applications, please contact Paul Berg. This is NOT a secret process.

Awards will be announced by May 17th.

Checks will be presented to the athletes as part of the awards ceremony at the Kenwood Footrace on July 4.

In mid-February when the application was updated on the website, I received a phone call from an athlete at Ukiah High School inquiring whether he was eligible to apply for the scholarship. He explained that while Ukiah is not in Sonoma county, their school competes in a league comprised entirely of schools in Sonoma county. He also went on to describe his accomplishments competing in the NBL and beyond, and that there were no similar school in terms of size north of Ukiah. Given his initiative and argument, I told him that he could apply for the scholarship, but if there was any major objection within the club, he might be disqualified. Last week, Bill Hook, the track coach from Ukiah, called to inquire whether his athletes are eligible for the award, and I told him that they are. He said he has 2 qualified athletes who will be applying.

If any club member has any objections or questions, please have them contact me.

Respectfully submitted,
Paul Berg
