Glen McCarthy
In the early seventies one of the few successful running clubs in the Bay Area was
the Valley of the Moon Running Club, headed by Fred Kenyon.  It was an AAU
club (Amateur Athletic Union) which was being challenged by a new grass roots
organization called Road Runners Club of America.  The story goes that a group of 
runners decided after an Ilsanjo race (put on by VMRC) to form a new club, and 
Glen McCarthy used RRCA to form it.  RRCA is still going strong, and the AAU,
though still around in a few states, was largely replaced first by TAC 
(The Athletic Congress) and then by the current USATF (United States of 
America Track and Field).  
Glen not only founded the club, he was one of the top runners in the area.
Unfortunately, his job took him out of the area within a few years, so only
the really old timers remember him.  Linda Phaby, who was there when the club 
was founded, recently tracked Glen down where he now lives (and runs) in
